Who we are:

EMBL’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is a global leader in the storage, analysis and dissemination of large biological datasets. We help scientists realise the potential of big data by enhancing their ability to exploit complex information to make discoveries that benefit humankind. We are part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and are located on the Wellcome Genome Campus, one of the world’s largest concentrations of scientific and technical expertise in genomics.

What we’re doing in the Darwin Tree of Life Project:

One important goal of the DToL project is to make all of the newly sequenced genomes fully accessible to researchers everywhere, and this is where EMBL-EBI comes in. Every genome sequence from the project will be freely available through EMBL-EBI’s database, the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA). Each of the genome sequences collected will also be annotated, stored and made available through the Ensembl genome browser. EMBL-EBI is also building the Darwin Tree of Life Data Portal, which tracks the status of each sequenced genome.

Why we’re invested in the Darwin Tree of Life Project:

We strongly believe that research data should be open for anyone to access and use, to enable new discoveries. For over 25 years, our open data resources have served the global scientific community and we have acted as the custodians of the world’s public biomolecular data. The Darwin Tree of Life will produce a treasure trove of data for the scientific community, driving forward ecology and conservation.
